What is Darwin Core (dwc)?

Darwin Core (DwC) is a standard maintained by the Darwin Core maintenance group. It includes a glossary of terms (in other contexts these might be called properties, elements, fields, columns, attributes, or concepts) intended to facilitate the sharing of information about biological diversity by providing identifiers, labels, and definitions. Darwin Core is primarily based on taxa, their occurrence in nature as documented by observations, specimens, samples, and related information.

What is Audiovisual Core (ac)?

The Audiovisual Core Multimedia Resources Metadata Schema Audiovisual Core is a data standard for exchanging data describing biodiversity multimedia resources and collections produced by the GBIF/TDWG joint Multimedia Resources Metadata Task Group.

What is H2i?

HHI (pronouced H-2-i) was/is a very draft proposal for an anthropological extension to the Access to Biological Collection Data schema ABCD that was proposed by Charles Copp in a 2012 presentation.. We have used this as a jumping off point to create a standard json output from EMu xml for our cultural collections, documentation can be found in the our EMu-xml-to-json github repo

What is Latimer Core (ltc)?

The Latimer Core (lc) collection descriptions standard will be a successor to the unratified draft Natural Collections Description (ncd) data standard, whose development has been discontinued. Information about the task group developing the standard can be found in their github repo.

Details

Field structures and data entry workflows in collections management systems have traditionally been set up for day-to-day management of physical specimens and cultural resources. Over time the management of digital media has been added as a feature set as well. Development to accommodate these functions has by and large been done separately -- institution by institution and collection by collection. At the same time, the prolific creation of research datasets and media derived from the same collections, in formats that generally only suit the purpose of the publication for which it was created, means that downstream users of these data struggle to do so efficiently. Disparate datasets and formats also reduce the ability for data to be shared widely and accessed not only by researchers but by the peoples and cultures from whom they derive. In response to these FAIR data challenges, the biodiversity, cultural and informatics communities have developed many standards for the translation and sharing of data across domains into documented and stable formats. Methods for mapping to one or more of these standards, and generating new datasets, as well as regularly updating previously published ones, are priorities for the museum community.

The development of a methodology in EMu that is flexible enough to accommodate both new and updates to existing standards in a timely fashion, is critical not only to an institution's ability to fulfill grants but also to its ethical responsibilities as custodians of collections and their data.

Reason(s) for Change Request Darwin Core Tabs - version 1

Update and rationalise the Darwin Core mapped fields in the catalogue fields to reflect the most recent ratified version of the Darwin Core standard.

Status

  • DEPRECATED 2022 - See estandards module

Details

  • Module: ecatalogue
  • Remap to reflect updated Field Museum modules
  • Remove deprecated fields
  • Include ratified fields
  • Make provision for extensions
  • Align tabs with Darwin Core classes for ease of use.
  • Make then more universally applicable for searching.
