I've recently improved the installation for NodeGit that should cover issues #2 and #3.
NodeGit's flow will now attempt to compile from source specifically for your machine. If you don't have the right dependencies or the build fails for some reason, NodeGit will fetch a prebuilt binary from S3 that is generated on every release.
