I have seen that whatwg has multiple X/Twitter accounts, which I can only read if I login. Would it be possible to have additionally mastodon accounts?
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has an own instance: https://w3c.social/explore

Not sure what for you makes most sense - own instance or join one of the many existing ones: https://joinmastodon.org/

It is all based on ActivityPub, so one can not only connect different types of servers, but one could also in case of standard changes automatically raise new issues with own libraries etc.

I think this would be good, but we'd need someone to be willing to drive it probably.

@jornfranke are there well-established APIs and libraries for them for posting to a Mastodon instance?

There's also the question of which instance, I don't think we should host our own...

There are many well-established APIs and libraries:

On the instance question:
Maybe you can reuse the W3C instance as indicated above?

https://joinmastodon.org/ shows further instances, but not all.

There are also many others, you can also decide later on to move between instances without loosing your followers: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/moving/
