Feature request: Add scale bar

The native Android SDK supports a scale bar (unfortunately it doesn't seem the iOS SDK has a scale bar yet). It would be really useful to expose this in React Native, many of our users have been requesting a scale bar on the map - the alternative being to draw it with React Native, which might have a performance overhead.

We were able to add a scale bar using reac-native-scalebar successfully.

I agree, any map, either on paper or on a screen should have a scale bar.
I really can't understand why it can be done with the android SDK but not with Mapbox GL JS.

I hope the developers will hear our desperate cry and implement it

I was able to implement the native scale bar on iOS, but was unable to get it working on Android. We are currently using patch package instead of a fork but will share a text copy of the patch here in case it's helpful. And if anyone can assist on the Android implementation that would be awesome as well!

Did anyone succeed in getting this done? I've tried react-native-scale-bar and could not get the debounced updates for onRegionIsChanging to work. Would it be possible to bake this into the native side somehow following @mysport12's example? I agree that visualising the scale of the current zoom level is an essential feature. @ferdicus any plans?

Would like to see a compilation of the docs/ api for both iOS and Android though.
