The latest J3 versions and especially J4 brought a lot of new features to Joomla. The vast majority of them are enabled by default. I'd like to discuss, whether at least some of them should be disabled in a fresh Joomla installation.
I started with a (nearly) fresh installation of J5alpha2. In the Extensions list, I selected disabled Core Extensions. I found only 16.
On contrary, there are more than 180 enabled ones. This is a clear mismatch. There are many Core Extensions on the enabled list, which are hardly ever used on a somewhat "basic" Joomla website. Let me mention a few and comment on them:
Privacy
This is a very useful feature for European sites, if personal data are processed and stored. Not (yet) interesting for ROW.
Scheduled Tasks
IMHO, not yet in the focus for most websites.
Workflows
A very useful feature for larger organizations, where multiple people contribute to the website. Not useful for someone like me, who is the only contributor to his websites.
Webservices API
IMHO a potential security risk. See the security update from 4.2.7 to 4.2.8.
May be very useful, but not for everyone.
The majority of those advanced features will most probably not be used on a small website created for a restaurant, a tennis club, or some other small business. If a website builder really needs them, then he will know what to do, and he will have no difficulties in activating them.
I suggest to go through the list of Core Extensions and set the default setting to "Disabled" for those that will not be used for typical "basic" website.
