Here is a draft of our grading rubric for homeworks and tests, on a 10-point scale:
11: if completed extra credit AND everything perfect
10: everything's perfect!
9: mostly terrific; solid grasp of assignment, some little thing not as it should be
8.5 or 8.8: Very Good, ~one serious thing is problematic
8 good/sufficient but sketchy work, missing something important (more sketchy than the Very Good)
7.5: just good enough, but light on effort
7, 6, or 5: various levels of not satisfactory work (6 is usually my lowest score)
5: something abysmal: perhaps they completed one thing properly.
